Stranded in the middle of nowhere

My Blog

Chindonesian guy with very poor Chinese sense. Refused to learn Chinese as a child, and having regrets about it now. (very) Slowly keeping up with the regrets by listening to Mandarin music and tuning into Taiwan entertaiment shows.

A Trip to SK Radio

Posted by lefhen at 09:00 AM on October 7, 2005.

Yesterday, I went to SK radio to pick up a prize that I've won. I got the prize for joining a contest from one of SK's programme called Trafieska. Trafieska is a radio show based on English. It encourages people to call-in and practice their English. Basically, it's a fun and crazy show. The mastermind is the American guy named Uncle JC. He's done the show like years before and has switched to several radio station until settling in SK... well, at least for now :P

Now, about the contest that I've won. 2 weeks before, they held this Josh Groban's "You Raise Me Up" singing contest. The prize is quite intriguing. For first prize, a free english course at EEC worth for over 1.5 million rupiahs. For the second prize, free meal at Cafe Batavia worth 750 thousand rupiahs. Third prize is voucher for Cafe Seven (?). And fourth-fifth prize is a pair of shoes, given to the worst singer :D

So, I figured that I should give it a try. The prize was not bad. And I thought I had a pretty good chance. So I called, just to join the contest. The rule is you must sing only the refrain part of "You Raise Me Up", anyway you like. It can be sing beautifully, weird, funny or anything, as long as it is good or creative. I insisted singing from the beginning. Kinda nervous, but I managed to do it.

I ended up winning the 2nd prize (Yay!! Free meal! :D). But things didn't go as smooth as I thought it would be. There was a little mix-up about the winner identity. They misidentified me with another caller called Jin. I had to make few phone calls over to the radio station to clear the mess. I started to doubt that I really won the prize. The problem is that it was annouced clearly that my name won the 2nd. But when I called, they said it was a different person who won. Well, I don't mind if the person happened to have a same name as mine and turned out that the guy won the prize, but there was nothing similar with the names. So, I decided to make a final call to Lily (sorry to bother you, Lily) because there's no use arguing with the management. A day after I called, they fixed the misunderstanding and declared me as the eligible winner. Oh, goody goody!!

Well, about the winning part, I don't know about it. My singing is not that superb or sumtin. Probably there were not as much callers who willing to try the contest. That's why, at the first place, I think I would have a very good chance to win :)

So yesterday afternoon, I went over to the radio station. And it made me realize, walking from the Mampang-Kuningan crossroad to the Adhi Graha building is quite a long walk! It looked so close when I was on the bus :P Finally, I got there. I met Uncle JC in person for after these years only hearing his voices from the radio. And I also met his co-hosts: Lily and Andy (accompanied his beautiful gf: Mandy). Lily handed me the voucher and I stayed there a while to see them doing the show. It's the first time ever that I've seen a studio where they air radio programmes. The studio where they do the show, it turned out so much smaller than what I've had expected. It was like only a 3 by 4 metres cubicle! I didn't stay until the show was over. I took a couple of pictures with them before I finally went home.

It was a nice experience. Now, I have to make plans of how and when to spend the voucher :D

Stefanie Sun's Newest Album: A Perfect Day

Posted by lefhen at 04:40 PM on October 12, 2005.

The newest release of Stefanie Sun Yan Zi's album is called Wan Mei De Yi Tian (A Perfect Day). I was not planning on writing about this album. But the album is so great that I just cannot not-mention about it.

As usual, Stefanie Sun's great and unique voice will indulge your ears. There are 10 songs in this new album. I highly recommend her slow songs in this one. All of them will just drift you away with the flow of her voice.

And one song should be mentioned in particular. It is called "Meng Bu Luo". This song is very energizing. It has a marching band as the background music. The drumline just takes your breath away. Exceptionally great music!! Try listening to this song with a good headphone and turn the volume all the way up. It'll definitely blow your mind. Makes you feel you're in the middle of a vastly football field.

Well, the review is short. It's entirely because I'm out of words to describe Stef's new album. You'll just have to listen for yourself. Words won't be enough to tell you what's in the "A Perfect Day" album. One thing for sure: Totally perfect!!
