Stranded in the middle of nowhere

My Blog

Chindonesian guy with very poor Chinese sense. Refused to learn Chinese as a child, and having regrets about it now. (very) Slowly keeping up with the regrets by listening to Mandarin music and tuning into Taiwan entertaiment shows.

JJ Lin Jun Jie's 3rd album

Posted by lefhen at 09:27 AM on April 5, 2005.

At last, after a long long wait, JJ's 3rd album is out. More new songs from the talented Singaporean artist. The album is named "Bian Hao 89757". Don't ask me what it means, OK? ^^;;

In this album, there are 12 tracks. 2 tracks are interlude tracks, so there are 10 new songs. All songs still have the JJ feeling like the first 2 albums of his, as he did all the musical arrangement. If you enjoy his previous albums, there's no doubt that you'd like this album.

Now, time for a piece of my opinion about "Bian Hao 89757" album. I always like his sentimental, melancholic songs. Too bad in this album, there's only about 2 songs that share those characteristics. I love it and instantly have become my favorites, at least for now. Not that the other songs are bad. They are still enjoyable. Probably it haven't got into my veins yet :P

The 2 songs I've mentioned is called "Jian Jian Dan Dan" and "Yi Qian Nian Yi Hou". It's on track 7 and 12. Slow tempo and really points out JJ's great voice. Other song that is quite good is "Mu Nai Yi". This song have more tempo and upbeat feeling. Enjoyable!

Well, that's my little introduction about JJ's newest album. Hope that JJ will carry on producing good music for Mandarin song lovers. Jia you, JJ!! ^^

F.I.R.

Posted by lefhen at 04:49 PM on April 11, 2005.

This is really a treat! First JJ, and now F.I.R.! What more can you ask for? F.I.R., a Taiwanese band consists of a female and two males, has just released their newest album. Still with their kind of music.

What's new is that you can find a slight of Indonesian flavour in this album. You can hear gamelan, a Javanese traditional musical instrument, playing in the background of their 'Qian Nian Zhi Lian' song. Another one is in their other song called 'Ai De Li Liang', you can hear Indonesian words mentioned... "remaja putri, putri remaja". I wonder if they really came to Indonesia to study the cultural music. It probably nothing surprising if you hear it from singers like A Niu or Liang Jing Ru, because they came from Malaysia and probably have it from their Malayan culture. But, F.I.R. is pure from Taiwan... that is if I am not mistaken ^^;;

I don't want to say much about the album because it speaks for itself. You just have to listen to their songs. It's just another great one. I would say that F.I.R. is the best Chinese band ever. And if you know me well, I was never the band-kind of guy. So they gotta be really good that I can be interested in them ;)

Phoenix A Date With Aceh

Posted by lefhen at 09:45 AM on April 20, 2005.

Last nite, my auntie got this invitation to a charity night for Aceh and asked me and my sister to come along. There were my uncle, my aunt, my sister, me, and my two cousins. I knew Jackie Chan (Chen Long) will be there but I don't know what it's all about. I thought there were going to be a lot of singing. I was wrong...

The event was at Balai Sudirman. I've gone there for my friend's wedding not long ago. We arrived at 8pm, a bit late from the scheduled time. But the event was just about to start. We ended up sitting at the back row. And could only see Jackie's face from the big display on either side of the stage. Not long, we moved a bit closer to the front sitting on the left wing of the hall but still too far to see the stage. But eventually, we managed to sit close to the front at the end since people are leaving early before the event ended :P

The show started with an Aceh dance, followed with a word from the promotors(?) of the show, someone from the Social Department and The Phoenix Television Network. Then, a chat with Jackie Chan and Eric Zeng Zhi Wei, conducted by the MCs from MetroTV and Phoenix presenters. And also chats with Miss World, Miss China, Miss Indonesia, and a guy who won the gold medal for the Olympics. There was also Sherina singing 'Indonesia Menangis', IIRC.

Jackie Chan sang one song. A duet with the Phoenix presenter which I forgot her name. It's something with Xiao Li in it, I guess ^^;;
Jackie was funny. He's truly the main attraction. He healed my disappointment that I was expecting a lot of singing from HK artists. He's really good with jokes and makes a perfect combination with Eric Zeng.

And there was an unplanned auction happening last nite. A moment before that, children from Aceh who lost their parents to the tsunami disaster, stood on the stage carrying a candle while Sherina was singing. There are five of them, 3 boys and 2 girls. After the singing, the children was given an opportunity to speak their heart and tell it to Jackie. So, one of them, a girl, said to Jackie that she can't go to school anymore and wanted to continue studying. And so Jackie promised to cover all of the education fees for all 5 children standing on the stage.

And that triggered the auction. Eric Zeng said that Jackie didn't bring a lot of money to fulfill his promises to the children. Then he joked, saying that Jackie's clothes would be enough to pay for the children's education. Everybody thought it was a joke, even the presenters did. Jackie said he would do anything he could to help and that includes if he had to take off his clothes at that very moment. So he auctioned his clothes. Eric opened the auction at US$100. People hesitated for a moment and the auction started slow. But in the end... Jackie Chan's clothes was sold at US$30.000. Wow!! Go figure...

The charity night ended at about 10.30. So, we went back home. Pretty impressive night, although it's not like what I had in mind. Thank you Jackie Chan et al.
